Summary17109: Lime Survey crashes when trying to upload files/images to Resources and email templates.
Description

(First of all confirm that the actual version is 3.25.14, but it is not available in drop down box)
The LimeSurvey application crashes when I try to upload files or images under "Resources" in the Survey menu.
The same happens when I try to upload images to the body of the email and when I try to add files to the email (Email Templates).

In a previous survey (ID 325974) draft of the current one (ID 722842), I was able to upload files and images and add them to the e.mail, but now, when I try to do so, LimeSurvey crashes as well.

The problem originates before uploading images (.png) or documents (pdf):

  1. Menu "Survey configuration", option "Resources": when I select "Resources", LimeSurvey gets blocked (see "add resources" file).
  2. Menu "Survey configuration", option "Email templates": When I select "insert image", (insert image 1), a screen to select the image is displayed and when I select "view server" (insert image 2), LimeSurvey crashes (insert image 3 and 4).
  3. "Survey configuration" menu, option "Email templates": When I select "Add file to email", LimeSurvey crashes (add file 1).

After pressing "Resources", the screen remains inhibited for a few seconds (see file "Resources 1") and the message appears:
"The page is not responding".
"You can either exit the page or wait for it to respond"
(see file "Resources 2").

The message is the same when I try to insert an image in the body of the e.mail or when I try to add a file to the e.mail.

From the Microsoft Edge browser I have managed to access Resources, insert images and add files.
It is therefore a problem with Google Chrome
Google Chrome is the browser I usually use, could you please guide me on how to configure it?

Yes, I think it's my computer's Chrome settings too, but I don't know what feature I need to change. For the moment I have done the resource loading from Edge and I will try to send the emails from Chrome.

This morning, from Chrome, I sent 2 emails inviting to participate in the survey to my address and they didn't arrive (the emails have an image inserted in the body of the email and a pdf file added).
Then I tried from Edge and they didn't arrive either.
My surprise is that when I tried to access Survey Resources, the same problem appears as with Chrome. On 3 March 2021 I managed to access from Edge and incorporate resources, insert images in the body of the email and add a pdf file to the email. I have not changed anything in my computer settings since then. I don't understand the problem that is occurring.
In December 2019 I sent several e.mails with files and images to test a draft survey and everything worked perfectly.

I can't understand what the problem is.

Yesterday, around 9.45 pm, I managed to access the "Resources" section of the survey from "Internet Explorer" (I still have it installed on my computer and I haven't used it for years).
I sent two emails from IE and the result is the same as with Chrome and Edge: LimeSurvey informs me that it has sent the emails, but they do not arrive to the receivers.
My current situation:

  1. The resources are loaded and added to the mail (I did it on 3 March 21, from Edge).
  2. From Edge and Chrome I can neither access nor add resources to the mail template.
  3. Emails with inserted images and added files sent from Chrome, Edge and IE do not reach the receiver.

I am going to continue with the procedure of sending the emails to my email address without images or files and from my email I forward them attaching a pdf file and inserting the university logo in the body of the email.
(I attach a screenshot with the "Resources" access from IE).

I have removed the pdf file and the embedded image from the email and changed the email address to send them to myself and the emails are still not arriving!
I have sent 300 invitations to participate in the survey using this formula, but now it has stopped working.
I need to fix this problem urgently. I have been preparing the survey for my PhD thesis for a year and a half and now that I have started to send the emails, the problems are preventing me from making progress.
Is it necessary for me to make another incident?
Can you enter my survey to see what is happening? I authorise you to do so.

I apologise for the many notes I am attaching.
After all the tests I have reported in previous notes, I decided to perform one last test: I created a fictitious survey participant with another email address of my own and sent an invitation to participate in the survey (the email did not include any embedded images or attachments). Pleasant surprise: the email arrived.
I then logged in from Internet Explorer and inserted an image with the university logo and added a pdf file. I sent the e-mail again and received an error e-mail:

     This is the mail system at host 20.limesurvey.host.

     I'm sorry to have to inform you that your message could not be delivered to one or more recipients. It's attached below.

     For further assistance, please send mail to postmaster.

     If you do so, please include this problem report. You can delete your own text from the attached returned message.

I created another dummy participant with my work email address and sent the email and it arrived successfully with the attachment.

Given the good experience, I sent mail to two more real participants and got the same error: SMTPUTF8 is required, but was not offered by host...

I have checked that the e-mails are correct.

I can confirm the identical problem as described.

Chrome Crashes when entering resources area. Edge works fine. I am on Windows. Self hosted LimeSurvey Version 3.7.1+180424
Chrome Version 89.0.4389.82 (Official Build) (64-bit)
No Chrome plugins, no Lime Plugins or extra themes

I should add that I can't use Edge either because of other problems (the question and answer edit boxes are all invisible in recent updates, but not invisible on Chrome) so I am having to add resources in Edge and edit questions in chrome. Something is not good...

Update: I just updated from 3.7.1 to 3.25.17
and
a) The chrome issue remains(as the original poster describes)
b) The different Edge issue is resolved

So now at least it is possible to use Edge but not Chrome

@Andrewpace: I am inclined to close this issue as we cannot reproduce it all. It could be related to a special Chrome Setting.
Can you try to reset Chrome to standard settings and see if that helps? Are you using any special kind of virus scan software or similar that might act as a proxy?
Can you try to use Chrome from another device?

I don't think I would simply close it. First there are at least two people reporting the identical problem.

Second there are known problems with the KCFinder module and Chrome depending on the way it is set up and that module is quite old and not being updated:
There seem to be accumulating issues which are not going to be corrected, some of which do apply to Chrome:

Probably developers need to look to replacing this module?

My Chrome setup is as installed, and I don't have another machine to try. No proxies.

We have hundreds of thousands LimeSurvey instances out there and only a couple people reporting this, which makes it very unlikely that it is a general problem.
I can also confirm that it works just fine here on Chrome. Maybe it is a bug in certain versions of Chrome?

If we cannot reproduce an issue we can just close it unless a way is found to reproduce.

I tried it from my smartphone and was able to browse, with difficulty due to the size of the screen, through the different options in the menus, but when I tried to access Resources, the screen was blocked.
